The Magic of Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning

Introduction to Microdermabrasion

In order to achieve more flawless skin, both men and women often turn to Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning. These procedures are done by an Esthetician in conjunction or separately. Both procedures exfoliate and remove dead skin cells from the upper layer of the epidermis, known as the stratum corneum. The results of these procedures reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin related conditions. The introduction of microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning can safely be introduced as young as 12 and up to 65.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Estheticians use a crystal-emitting handpiece to blow a fine stream of crystals against the skin. The crystals loosen the dead and dry skin cells so they can easily be extracted. The esthetician then uses a vacuum like device to remove the dead skin and reveals fresh glowing, healthy skin underneath.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

For most people, the coming-of-age story involves bad acne and then acne scarring. Big red bumps all over our faces and wishing for clearer skin. Acne tends to resurface in adulthood and the thought of going through the scarring process all over again can seem unbearable. Microdermabrasion helps with acne scars and over time there should be noticeable improvements in the acne scarring. Outside of the noticeable results microdermabrasion also stimulates the production of new, succulent skin cells and proteins such as elastin and collagen. These two proteins form a type of springy base layer underneath the skin to keep it supple and young. As we get older, these proteins diminish. To keep a healthy youthful appearance introduce collagen and elastin producing procedures and supplements.

What are Microdermabrasion Crystals Made of?

There are two basic types of microderm facials, Crystal Microdermabrasion and Diamond Microdermabrasion. Both offer similar benefits but their processes differ slightly. To learn the difference between Crystal Microdermabrasion and Diamond Microdermabrasion please read the Blog titled

Crystal Microdermabrasion vs. Diamond Microdermabrasion

For the purpose of this blog we are focusing on the crystal technique. The crystals used in Crystal Microdermabrasion are typically very fine, abrasive material like aluminum oxide. Other common materials used in the crystals include magnesium oxide, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate. All are ultra-fine crystals that should be discarded after each use.

Equipment and Technique for Microderm Facials

Microderm facials are done by a licensed esthetician, nurse, or physician. This treatment, most commonly done on the face, can also be done on the hands, neck, and chest. Different pressure techniques are used to get deeper into the skin and to achieve varying results. Consult with your licensed professional on the results you want to achieve. If you provide this service and go deeper than the epidermis you may need to review your insurance policy to ensure that you have the correct professional liability coverage.

When is the best time to get Microdermabrasion?

As some flaking and peeling post treatment is common, timing is crucial if planning to have this treatment done before a special event. Sensitive skin types should consult with a physician before receiving this treatment as it can cause irritation. Microdermabrasion does not penetrate the deepest layers of skin where fine lines and wrinkles are hardest to get to. For deep lines and wrinkles different treatments may be recommended. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends getting microdermabrasion once a month to see long lasting results.

Is Microdermabrasion safe?

Microdermabrasion is minimally invasive and considered safe for all skin types. It is important to understand that microdermabrasion is not the same as dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a more invasive treatment that “sands” the skin to get into the deeper layers which causes more down time and can cause skin discoloration and scarring in darker areas and skin types 5 and 6.

Immediately following the microdermabrasion treatment there may be some redness and irritation which should go down shortly after the treatment. Follow the healing procedures given to you by your technician and it’s best to avoid sun exposure as much as possible.
