Beauty & Medspa Insurance Terms

A

Additional Insured

A person or organization added to an insurance policy for certain liability protections connected to the named insured’s work. A landlord, venue, property owner, or business partner may ask a beauty professional to add it as an additional insured. The endorsement and policy language determine the protection provided.

Aggregate Limit

The maximum amount an insurance policy will pay for all covered claims during the applicable policy period. An aggregate limit is separate from any limit that may apply to each individual claim or occurrence.

C

Certificate of Insurance (COI)

A document summarizing key information about an insurance policy, including the insured’s name, types of coverage, policy limits, and effective dates. A certificate provides evidence of insurance but does not change or expand the coverage provided by the policy.

Claim

A request for payment or other assistance under an insurance policy following an alleged injury, loss, or covered event. Claims should be reported according to the notification requirements stated in the policy.

Claims-Made Coverage

A type of coverage generally triggered when a claim is first made against the insured and reported to the insurance company during the policy period. Coverage is subject to the policy’s retroactive date and other terms. Maintaining continuous coverage can be especially important with a claims-made policy.

Coverage Territory

The geographic area in which an insurance policy applies. The policy defines the exact territory and any limitations involving services performed or claims brought outside that area.

D

Deductible

The amount the insured is responsible for paying toward a covered loss before the insurance company’s payment obligation applies. Deductibles may vary by coverage type and claim.

E

Endorsement

A written addition or amendment that modifies the coverage, terms, conditions, or exclusions of an insurance policy. An endorsement becomes part of the policy and should be reviewed together with the main policy documents.

Exclusion

A policy provision identifying a circumstance, service, activity, type of loss, or other risk that is not covered. Exclusions vary by policy and can materially affect whether a claim qualifies for coverage.

G

General Liability Insurance

Coverage that may respond to certain third-party claims involving bodily injury, property damage, or personal and advertising injury arising from business operations. It is distinct from professional liability coverage for claims connected to professional services.

I

Incident

An event or circumstance that could potentially lead to a claim, even if no formal demand has been made. Promptly documenting and reporting an incident may be required under the policy.

Insured

A person or organization that qualifies for protection under an insurance policy. The policy identifies who is insured and may distinguish among the named insured, employees, additional insureds, and other parties.

L

Lapse in Coverage

A period during which insurance coverage is not active, often because a policy expired, was canceled, or was not renewed on time. A lapse can affect protection for later claims, particularly under claims-made coverage.

Liability Limit

The maximum amount an insurer may pay for a covered claim or category of claims. Policies may include per-claim, per-occurrence, and aggregate limits.

N

Named Insured

The individual or organization specifically listed on the policy declarations. The named insured typically has primary responsibilities under the policy, including paying premiums and providing accurate application information.

O

Occurrence Coverage

Coverage generally triggered by a covered event that takes place during the policy period, even if the claim is made after the policy has ended, subject to all policy terms and reporting requirements.

P

Policy Period

The dates between which an insurance policy is in effect, as shown in the declarations. Covered services or events must satisfy the policy’s timing requirements.

Prior Acts Coverage

Protection that may apply to eligible professional services performed before the current policy’s start date but on or after its retroactive date. Availability and scope depend on the policy terms and continuity of coverage.

Professional Liability Insurance

Coverage that may respond to certain claims alleging negligence, errors, or omissions arising from professional services. For beauty and wellness professionals, eligibility may depend on the services performed, licensing, training, equipment, and other underwriting factors.

R

Retroactive Date

The earliest date on which eligible professional services may have occurred for a later claim to be considered under a claims-made policy. Services performed before this date are generally outside the policy’s prior-acts coverage.

Risk Management

The process of identifying and reducing potential sources of injury, loss, or claims. In a beauty or wellness practice, this can include documented consultations, informed consent, sanitation procedures, staff training, equipment maintenance, and accurate recordkeeping.

S

Sexual Abuse and Molestation Coverage

Coverage that may apply to certain allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse, or molestation, subject to the policy’s definitions, exclusions, limits, and conditions. Availability and scope vary significantly among policies.

T

Tail Coverage / Extended Reporting Period

An extended reporting period that may allow an insured to report certain claims after a claims-made policy ends, when the underlying professional service occurred after the retroactive date and before the policy ended. It does not extend the period during which services may be performed.

U

Underwriting

The process an insurer uses to evaluate an applicant’s services, training, licensing, claims history, equipment, procedures, and other risk factors before deciding whether and on what terms coverage may be offered.
